What is content, course or expert licensing?

Course Licensing Examples

Licensing is like “renting” your content, courses, trainings, frameworks, methods, systems or processes for other companies to share, sell, or distribute - so that they can grow faster, make more money, provide better services, deliver superior trainings.

For simplicity - we’re taking the same training, course, method or framework that you currently sell or have sold, and we’re repackaging it to be distributed by other companies, industries and channels.

Same program = New buyer

(As defined by April Beach Cc. 2012)

  • Instead of (or in addition to) selling your course to individuals, you license it to a larger “buyer” with seats offered in bulk.

  • Instead of selling a business training or certification to other companies where they pay once for the knowledge - you license the same training once with permission to use your tools, processes, worksheets or SOPs in their business, for their teams, or with their own clients. Your licensees (or buyers) then renew their permissions, and you get ongoing revenue without selling.

  • Instead of just selling your training to your current ideal end users, you create a new sales channel that allows other industries to license your trainings for their employees, students, or added to their programs.

How Does Course Licensing Actually Work?

The Simple Version

Real Client Example

A company needs training for their team or customers. Instead of creating content from scratch (which can cost them 6-18 months and $100K+), they license your proven program. You get paid for content you’ve already created, and they get immediate access to expert-level training.

A social worker licenses her communications course to a nonprofit. The company pays $50K+ upfront to use the training for their leaders, plus an additional fee for her to facilitate an in-person workshop. The social worker earns more in one deal than most make all year.

Established subject matter experts, coaches, consultants, authors, speakers, or specialists as well as large organizations or corporations, who have proven systems that deliver predictable, transformational, measurable results based on their unique intellectual property. Do I need to build my course or licensing program before licensing it?

Do I need to build my course or licensing program before licensing it?

No, taking time to build out your course can actually hurt you in licensing. In licensing, we sell before we build (and before we update current content). The reason for this is because you will have time between closing a deal and delivery. Building out a course for licensing before it’s sold leads to one of the biggest licensing mistakes we see that could cost you thousands of dollars in time and money. However, your teachings must be tested and proven to work, even if they are not built into a course or training yet.

Additional FAQ

Additional FAQ

Q: How much money do I need to get started with licensing?
A: Unlike launching products that require significant upfront investment, licensing leverages expertise you already have. Our programs range from low-cost introductory training to comprehensive done-for/with-you support. Legal and contracts will be your greatest expense. If you work with us we provide the licensing template contract for you ($18K value), but you will always want to receive legal counsel. We provide referrals for our clients.

Q: How long does it take to close my first licensing deal?
A: Most of our clients close their first deal within 1-6 months of completing our License to Scale™ program. The timeline depends on your industry, existing network, effort, business acumen, and how actively you implement our strategies. The size of the company you are licensing to also defines close times. The larger the deal the longer it takes to close due to multiple decision markers, whereas smaller quick-sells are a favorite place where our clients start. Industries have buying seasons you'll also want to align with.

Q: Do I need to be an established expert to license my content?
A: You need proven expertise and results with your methods, but you don't need to be a household name. Many of our most successful clients are unknown with little or no social following.

Q: What if my content is too specialized or niche?
A: Specialized content can actually license faster and/or for higher fees because it solves a specific problem. We help our clients identify which industries need your exact expertise. Our clients range from sales experts, to neuroscientists, college professors to speakers, and home builders to speakers. If your trainings are excellent, there’s an industry looking to implement it.

Q: How is licensing different from franchising?
A: Licensing allows you to grant another business or organization permission to use your intellectual property—like your curriculum, program, or framework—under agreed terms, while you retain full ownership and creative control. Franchising, on the other hand, involves replicating an entire business model (brand, operations, systems, and products) where the franchisee runs a duplicate of your business. In short: licensing shares your content; franchising replicates your company. Seek legal advice for your specific needs.

Q: Do you provide legal advice?
A: No. We do not provide legal advice. While some of our clients are attorneys who participate in and benefit from our licensing programs, the education, frameworks, and templates we provide are for informational purposes only. All legal decisions should be made in consultation with your own qualified attorney.
